AMES RARE CIVIL WAR DRAGOON SABER
&
ORIGINAL SCABBARD
The 1833 U.S. Dragoon saber was modeled on the British 1821/22 light cavalry sabers and replaced the old pattern Starr sabers. Contracts were given to Ames and the sword was the standard edged weapon for U.S. mounted troops into the beginning of the Mexican War and was still in the hands of many state troops and militia units at the end of the Civil War. This is a collectors dream. Just how they like to find a sword, scabbard shows use and age, but the sword itself shows great condition when drawn, the brass hilt has a beautiful mellow patina and the brown leather grip wrap is all present and tighter than your crazy brother in law on New Years Eve. The coiled brass binding wire is for a battlefield weapon remarkably still in place and not sprung. The leather shows some very minor wear. Overall rating very good to Excellent. The scabbard is complete with throat, drag and carrying rings in place. It is a crusty brown overall with a self inflicted dent or two so your enemy doesn't know your coming. It is tough to make out any inspector initials on the drag but there is a semi visible United States with the all important leaves just below in the lost art of the dry-point script engraving method. However the real pleasure and surprise is in how well the blade was protected. It presents with a wonderful mix of bright metal and silvery-gray with just a few scattered age spots. Unlike many of these historical weapons this example was lovingly cared for by a loved one or Family member and it shows. This saber was one of only 1,700 sabers contracted to Ames in 1835 and delivered through 1836 and 837. It is the saber carried by in the early years of US westward expansion and the greatest war ever fought in the Western Hemisphere which invented The United States of America. Folks these type weapons are becoming extremely rare and hardly ever in this condition. You can display it proudly now and leave a wonderful and valuable Legacy for your Heirs, do not pass this by and Just to make it a little bit easier to purchase, See Below.
