    Description

This is a high grade original presentation Staff & Field Officers sword.  The sword's grip has all of its original leather and triple wire wrap.  The pommel cap is engraved with a floral motif and shield.   The guard has the floral motif and standard U.S.   The blade is absolutely beautiful with an American eagle on one side and the U.S. on the opposite.   The highly lustrous blade does have some spotting near the upper portion of the ricasso.  The sword was made by and stamped :  Collins &  Co.  Hartford  Conn.   and dated 1862.  Other side of ricasso is marked: Schuyler Hartley & Graham NY.    They were the ones who sold the sword in New York.   It still has its original throat washer.  No rattle or looseness with blade or handle.  The scabbard is also quite beautiful.  Body of scabbard retains almost 100% of its shiny brown lacquered finish.  Brass fittings are also highly engraved .  The brass drag is engraved with an eagle, federal shield, and U.S.
Now for the interesting part.  On the top scabbard ring fitting there is a shield that at one time had a presentation engraved on it.  Who knows why but years ago some imbecile decided to try to obliterate that by rubbing it off.  You can still make a date of 1863 and a letter or two here and there.  I have been told by a police friend of mine, now retired, that there is a way sometimes under very high magnification to partially or completely discern what was once there.  Although I've had this sword at least 40 years plus,  I have never looked into that probably because of the cost.  Over my 50+ years of collecting I've had dozens of ID'd and presentation items but I never got around to researching all of them.  But readable inscription or not this is still a very beautiful example of a fine presentation grade of sword sold by a very prestigious NY firm.
