Description
Non-Regulation Horster Model 1860 Cavalry Officers' Saber Civil War SwordCivil War Cavalry Officers' saber with non-regulation, iron hilt with three-branch guard. The pommel cap is swept downward to provide a better grip. The soligen blade has standard acid etched decorations. Officers' sabers were privately purchased from various dealers in military goods such as Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. This example has a 32.25" single-edge slightly curved blade that is etched on the right side with a very large panel and an open-winged American eagle holding an "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner in its beak. The right ricasso is marked "PROVED" in raised letters. The left side of the blade is etched with a large panel with floral sprays and the script letters "U. S." - the "U. S." appear upside-down when holding the sword as it is normally held. The left ricasso is marked "T. HORSTER / SOLINGEN". The three-branch half-basket guard is iron and may have been plated. The rayskin grips are wound with a three-strand silver wire. The scabbard is iron.
Very good. The blade is bright . The acid-etched decorations are generally crisp. Grips are good. Guard has a patina. Scabbard is very good. Overall 39.5".
